Bespoke Cycling Holidays in Kerala. Why the Best Journeys Are the Ones You Design Yourself

Cycling holidays in Kerala are not a new idea. Several operators have been running them for years. Established routes, experienced guides, good vehicles. They know the roads, they know the terrain, and they've built solid businesses doing what they do. But here's what most of them won't tell you: they're built for a fixed model, not for you. Most cycling tour operators in Kerala work primarily with foreign agents. Guests arrive through overseas agents, booked onto set departures with predetermined itineraries. The larger lot of cycles would be older, but maintained. The communication can be rigid. And customisation? That's usually where the conversation ends. When your business is built around a fixed product sold through agents, there's little appetite to redesign the programme for a single guest with a specific wish list. That's exactly the gap we set out to fill at Green Earth Trails.

What Bespoke Actually Means

When Elly O'Brien came to us looking for a cycling holiday in Kerala, she had already approached other operators. She had a specific vision: a private cycling experience, not a fixed group departure (for leisure programs we have two 5 day fixed departures each month from Kochi - a 6 seats ), built around what she actually wanted to do rather than what was already on the shelf.

Most operators couldn't accommodate her. We could.

"We had a fantastic cycling holiday in Kerala with Green Earth Trails. The accommodation was well organised and all nice places chosen. The Murmur Camp was particularly special. Our cycling guide Rinshad and his cousin were brilliant, lovely guys who looked after us really well. I thoroughly enjoyed cycling around the tea plantations and learning lots of local knowledge. We also took a day trek up to Meesapulimala which was lovely. It's a long jeep trek to access the mountain but well worth it for the views. We had the mountain to ourselves at that time of day. We had good communication from Ben who organised our trip throughout, right from initial enquiries, and he was happy to design a trip to meet our ticklist. We ended in Periyar National Park and enjoyed a walk and bamboo rafting, again very worthwhile adventure."

Elly's Kerala cycling holiday experience

Elly didn't do a standard 5-day cycling programme. She did 4 focused days of cycling, combined with a Meesapulimala trek and bamboo rafting in Periyar. It wasn't on any brochure. We built it specifically for her. That is what bespoke means.

The Cycles, The Guides, The Routes

We ride Trek Marlin 5 Gen 3 cycles: current generation, well maintained, properly fitted. This matters more than it sounds. A long day in the saddle on an ill-fitted, ageing cycle is a very different experience from the same day on a bike that works with you.

Our guides know Kerala's cycling routes intimately. The plantation trails above Munnar that no tour bus ever reaches. The quiet backroad descents through cardamom and rubber country. The flat stretches along the backwater canals where the only sound is water and birdsong. These are not routes taken from a guidebook. They've been found by guides, tested and refined over years of cycling this landscape with guests who love it.

We keep our groups small, with a maximum of 6 guests. Beyond that, a cycling group becomes unwieldy on narrow village roads and the personal attention that makes the experience worthwhile starts to dilute. Six is the number where everyone gets looked after properly.

The Combinations Are the Point

What excites us most about cycling holidays is not the cycling alone. It's what you can combine it with.

Kerala's geography makes it one of the most naturally varied cycling destinations in the world. In a single journey you can move from high-altitude shola grasslands to tropical backwater canals, from mist-covered tea estates to Arabian Sea coastline. Each zone has its own character, its own pace, its own rewards.

Some guests want pure cycling: days in the saddle, route progression, distance covered. We can build that.

Others want cycling as one strand of a broader Kerala experience. Take Mara, another recent guest, who combined a Kerala leisure tour with a 3-day cycling section from Kumarakom through the backwaters to Alleppey, continuing to Kochi and finishing at Cherai Beach. Partially leisure, partially cycling. A taste of everything without committing to a full cycling tour. It worked beautifully because we designed it specifically around what she wanted from her Kerala trip.

The combinations we regularly build include:

Cycling with birding, particularly along the forest trails of Munnar and Thekkady where the early morning ride doubles as prime birding time. Cycling with trekking, where a Meesapulimala trek sits naturally alongside a Munnar cycling stay. Cycling with Ayurveda, ending the cycling days with proper treatment rather than just a hot shower. Cycling with the backwaters, finishing a hill station cycling programme with a houseboat day on the Alleppey canals where the contrast between the two is extraordinary.

We can also extend Kerala cycling into a broader South India journey as well. A cycling programme in the Kerala hills combined with a cultural tour through Tamil Nadu or Karnataka is something very few operators anywhere can put together, because very few have the depth of knowledge across both cycling and overland touring in this region.

Who Is This For

If you are looking for a fixed group departure at a fixed price on a fixed itinerary, there are operators who do that well and we'd encourage you to find them.

But if any of the following sounds like you, we should talk.

Taking the off beat cycling routes in Kerala - Green Earth Trails

You want a private cycling holiday, not a shared group departure. You have specific routes, experiences or destinations you want to include. You want to combine cycling with other activities like trekking, birding, backwaters or culture. You want to cycle for fewer days than a standard programme offers and combine the rest with a different style of travel. You are travelling as a couple, a small group of friends, or solo and want an experience built around your pace and preferences. You want someone who will answer your questions directly, respond quickly and design the trip with you rather than selling you something off a shelf.

That last point matters. From the first enquiry to the last day of your trip, you deal directly with us. No agents, no intermediaries, no standard responses. Just an honest conversation about what you want and how we can make it happen.

Start the Conversation

Every cycling holiday we organise begins the same way, with a conversation. Tell us where you want to go, how many days you have, what kind of cycling experience you're after, and what else you'd like to weave in. We'll take it from there.

Groups of up to 6 guests. Fully private. Completely customisable. Kerala, and beyond. email us @ hello@greenearthtrails.com Cycling holidays in Kerala private tour - www.greenearthtrails.com/cycling-tours-in-kerala-india Whatsapp @ wa.me/919400946800
