Magical sunset Island cruise of Kochi at Kadamakudy : A different slice of Kochi backwaters

When people think of Kerala, they often think of peaceful backwaters with houseboats. But near Kochi, there's another kind of water world waiting for you: Sunset Island cruise of Kochi at Kadamakudy Islands.

Boat cruise of Kadamakudy Islands with our little captain
Kadamakudy Island evening sunset boat cruise

These islands have an interesting story. Long ago, in 1341, a big flood changed the Periyar River. This flood created the Kadamakudy Islands. Now, many of these small islands are connected. The biggest one is called Pizhala, and you can even drive there using a bridge.

Imagine yourself on a small, quiet boat as the sun starts to set. The sky turns beautiful shades of orange and pink. This special one-hour trip takes you through the narrow waterways between the Kadamakudy Islands.

The boat you'll be on is called "Legend of Ousu Chettan." It's an electric boat, so it's quiet and doesn't harm the environment. Up to ten people can ride comfortably. The name of the boat has a local story, which you can hear when you go on the cruise.

Two local people will be with you: a guide and the boat driver. They know the islands very well. They will tell you stories about the area and share interesting facts about the culture and how people live here.

Legend of Ousu Chettan, living islands of Kochi

Around 45,000 people call these islands home. As you cruise, you'll see some unique things. Keep an eye out for a boat that serves as a hospital for the people living on the islands! You might also see people working with prawns – peeling them or laying them out to dry in the sun.

The islands have small shops that sell a local drink called toddy. You'll also see narrow bridges connecting the different parts of the islands. Many people here are involved in aquaculture, which means farming fish and prawns in the water. For many generations, the people of Kadamakudy have been fishermen. Their lives are closely connected to the water, their boats, and the local farming.

While you enjoy the peaceful cruise, you can have some light snacks. If you'd like a more special treat, you can pay a little extra. Then you can enjoy a Hawaiian chicken salad, fresh prawns, and a refreshing lime juice. It's a lovely way to enjoy the scenery as you cruise.

The electric boat moves smoothly and quietly through the water. It has two electric motors. It only needs about four hours of charging to run for up to six hours. This is a wonderful way to explore nature without making noise or pollution.
