Eravikulam National Park - Home of the Nilgiri Tahr & Anamudi Peak

Introduction

Just 8 km from Munnar town, Eravikulam National Park is Kerala’s very first national park and a crown jewel of the Western Ghats. Recently recognised as the Best National Park in India (2025), it is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and the mighty Anamudi Peak, the highest point in South India (2695 metres)

A Glimpse into History

What is now a protected sanctuary was once a game reserve for European planters in the hills of Munnar. The park was later declared a national park in 1978 to conserve the Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat species found only in this part of the Western Ghats.

Key Highlights of Eravikulam

  • Altitude: Around 2,000 metres above sea level

  • Anamudi Peak: Standing tall at 2,695 metres, Anamudi means “elephant’s forehead”. From certain angles, the peak looks strikingly like an elephant’s head.

  • Nilgiri Tahr: These graceful mountain goats with soulful eyes can be seen at close quarters, they are harmless and accustomed to visitors.

  • Panoramic Views: On clear days, enjoy a 180° view of rolling grasslands, rocky peaks, and mist-covered valleys of the Western Ghats.
