A Hidden Valley in the Western Ghats
Tucked away in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Mamalakandam is a true gem for nature lovers. Known as one of the wettest regions in Kerala, this valley thrives under the generous monsoon, nurturing lush greenery and an incredibly rich ecosystem. Located just off the route to Munnar, the road to Mamalakandam winds through steep slopes and rugged countryside, the kind of journey where you roll down your windows and let nature pour in.
This is one of the last few untouched valleys in the Western Ghats, where human habitation is still minimal, and development has taken a backseat, quite literally. The roads here are far from perfect, and that might be one reason the place has stayed the way it is: raw, quiet, and completely immersed in nature. Driving into Mamalakandam feels like entering a forested dream, streams running beside you, birdsong in the air, and distant waterfalls appearing like delicate white lines across the mountains.
If you’re the kind of traveler who wants to go off the grid, do nothing, and just listen to the whispers of the forest, this is the place for you. And if you're a seeker of untouched wilderness, there’s so much to explore here. The region is home to ancient dolmens, hinting at early human settlement, and sits right at the edge of dense forest zones. It’s also a haven for birdwatchers, offering an elevation-rich extension of the famed Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary.
While spotting wild elephants here depends on your luck, places like Anakulam, known for elephant sightings in Munnar are less than 10 km away as the crow flies. Mamalakandam isn't just scenic, it’s a living, breathing eco-zone waiting to be explored, or simply experienced in silence.
What to do in Mamalakandam
The best thing to do in Mamalakandam is surprisingly simple - "walk". Just take a slow, curious walk through this untouched valley and let nature reveal itself like a treasure hunt. You’ll spot colourful birds, rare plants, forest streams, and plenty of little beings going about their wild lives, even a leech or two if it’s not the dry season.
Mamalakandam is not a place for checklist travel. It’s a place for stillness, for observing nature’s rhythm, and for letting your senses recalibrate. Whether you’re seeking quiet introspection, nature photography, or just a digital detox, this valley offers a reset button unlike any other.
For wildlife lovers and researchers, it’s also a hotspot for birding and herping (reptile and amphibian tracking). And if luck is on your side, you might even spot wildlife - elephants, for instance, are occasionally seen wandering through the valley's elephant paths.
For the more adventurous souls, Mamalakandam offers some off-road Jeep rides that are both rugged and rewarding:
🚙 Koinippara Hilltop – A thrilling 4x4 climb that rewards you with panoramic views. On a clear day, you can even spot Cochin International Airport from the summit. The drive (up and down) takes around 2 hours and is not for the faint-hearted.
🪨 Munippara – Literally meaning Sage Rock, this spot is known for its ancient dolmens. The Jeep ride here is less intense, making it ideal for a relaxed off-road experience.
🌊 Urulikkuzhi River Crossing – An adventurous stretch where your Jeep literally drives across a rocky riverbed. It’s bumpy, wet, and totally fun.
💦 Waterfall Trails – The region also offers views of Kalladi and Valara waterfalls, and countless unnamed cascades and forest streams that are perfect for a quick dip or a picnic in nature.
If you're interested in cultural immersion, there are opportunities to engage with the local tribal communities. These experiences offer a glimpse into traditional forest life, how the community has adapted to and thrived in these wild belts for generations, their simple routines, herbal knowledge, and connection with the land.
Staying at Maram – The Only Resort in Mamalakandam (And a Pretty Special One)
I’ve known about Maram for a while, I’ve visited it earlier, even recommended it to a few guests, but this time was different. This time, I stayed there with my family, in one of their beautiful Mountain View Cottages, and it honestly felt like the perfect way to experience Mamalakandam.
Maram is currently the only resort in the region, and it fits so naturally into the surrounding landscape. It doesn’t try too hard, it just lets the mountains, the forest, and the quiet do most of the talking. But what really makes the place special is the hospitality. Robin, who runs the place, was also our guide for an incredible trek to a hidden waterfall. It was one of those trails where you lose track of time, thick forest, chirping birds, cold clear water, and just the right amount of adventure.
If you're someone who loves offbeat, quiet destinations, this place is gold. And if you're staying in Mamalakandam, Maram is where you want to be, not just for the comfort, but for the people and the connection they have with this land.
